Welcome

Welcome to The Mandt System® home page. As a company, we see ourselves as partners, not just vendors, with organizations who want to utilize the most comprehensive training program available to do more than anger management or crisis prevention. Since 1975 we have helped organizations such as yours to lay the foundations upon which human services can be delivered and received, and that foundation is the relationships between the people in the workplace.

The Mandt System® is in Australia

Why choose The Mandt System®? Here are some comments from participants::

"Over the past 18 years of experience within the Disability field I have been involved in numerous training courses designed to manage behaviours of concern. I found that the Mandt System® training fundamentally focused on positive behaviour support practices, positive relationship building, and healthy conflict resolution to support individuals who are experiencing behaviours of concern. The Mandt System® training supports staff to support the individual to reduce any level of risk with respect and dignity for the individual in mind at all times. The Mandt System® training is focused on providing contemporary evidenced based practice to support positive outcomes for the people we support.

I have provided Mandt System® training to 30 staff in our organisation to date, and aim to continue to train more.  Staff who have been involved in the training commented that it is not just about understanding the reactive strategies, but more importantly it is about understanding the individual and their needs".

Troy Howard, PRactice Leader, EW Tipping Foundation, Victoria

"I was one of the original 14 who completed this training in May this year with Bob Bowen. It was fantastic and I am hopgin to start training our staff at Outlook One in the near future "

Leonie Clydesdale - Outlook One

We can help you and your organization reduce, if not eliminate, workplace violence by learning how to “support people, not just their behaviours”™. While the concept of workplace violence focuses on staff, it also harms individuals served.  Decreasing WPV increases everyone’s safety!

“. . . organizations must realize that to reduce violence in the workplace, we need to increase those elements which lead to workplace safety. This approach will require a change in the culture of the workplace by learning how to “continually move away from coercion” (NAU, 2003) When we are able to find alternatives to coercive interventions, then we can lower the frequency, intensity and duration of restraint and increase safety.”

Bowen, Bob, (2010).  Moving Away from Coercion and Enhancing Patient Dignity and Respect , pages 135-150, in Workplace Violence in the Mental and General Health Care Setting. Jones and Bartlett, Sudbury, MA

There is a direct correlation between lowering the frequency, duration, and intensity of restraint with increased staff morale, increased consumer satisfaction, and decreased costs. Changing the way people relate to each other at work has a profound and lasting impact on all aspects of service delivery. The people served in organizations breathe the relational exhaust of staff to staff interactions. When the relationships staff have with each other are negative, the air our clients, students, residents, patients, etc. breathe is toxic and this has a negative effect on their behaviour. When the relationships between staff change, the entire environment is changed in healthy, positive ways.

Following is a statement by Mark Modra, the parent of a young man affected by autism with a history of very challenging behaviours. In 2003 Mark travelled to the US to investigate programs for people affected by autism, so that he could learn how to better support his own son. In one organization he was able to observe a staff person who was a certified trainer in The Mandt System®. This was his response to what he saw and heard

"I first learned about the MANDT System when I visited the Judevine Centre for Autism, in Missouri, in 2003. I was so impressed by what I saw I have tried to redirect peoples attention to this system for years.  I didn't get to see much at that time, but what I saw was impressive, and with the little knowledge I did gain at that time, I was better equipped to cope - and with just about any behaviour. It was the MANDT SYSTEM that taught me about the "supportive stance" and gave me the skills to smile and approach Luke with calm and confidence - even in the most extreme of situations. It was the MANDT SYSTEM techniques that enabled me on many occasions to get Luke from full rage -  to calm - in less than 60 seconds ! Hard to believe - but true.

Also - I would like to point out that personally - I would not even attempt to use any form of physical restraint -  but the fact is - sometimes you have no choice. There is provision under current law - for the use of Emergency Restraint.  However, I do not know of any other organization that is willing to provide staff with training on how to manage themselves properly in an emergency.  Most disability support workers resort to basic instincts - and that almost always - will lead to injury. Personally I would rather be trained to do it properly - than to have no training at all. I believe that a head in the sand approach is wrong - as an untrained restraint can be downright ineffective and dangerous. If you want examples - just call me."

We will also be presenting a one day workshop specifically for families of individuals whose behaviours may pose challenges in their homes. This workshop will provide families with immediate, non-physical skills they can use to better understand and respond do the needs of the people they love, and will be held on Friday, 20 May, 2011. The cost of the workshop is $149.00, for more information on Mandt for Families, visit our website at http://www.mandtsystem.au.com.

On Saturday, 21 May, 2011, there will be a two hour introductory session regarding The Mandt System®. There is no charge
